The Many Forms of Brine Shrimp

I had a very large fish tank in the kitchen, and filled it up with water, some "brine shrimp" eggs, and some food. Before the end of the night, however, upon inspecting the tank I discovered that there was more than brine shrimp in it- there were a number of fish, already the size of dimes, some crabs, and even some thrashing birds!

I opened the lid and took out a crab, inspecting it for a while and running it under the sink's water. Although I was uncertain if they would have enough food for the night, I then replaced the lid, which wouldn't close as previously it had been air tight, but now there was air in it. I pondered pumping water from the tank to the sink, but the air pump wouldn't work for that and I had nothing else that might work.

The next time I tried to close it, though, it worked, and then I went to bed.
